Join UChicago Medicine, as a Chaplain in our Spiritual Care department.

The Chaplain provides Spiritual Care services at UChicago Medicine by participating in the delivery of effective Spiritual Care services to patients, their loved ones and staff of all faith traditions. Actively supporting full integration of Spiritual Care services within UChicago Medicine and participating in and contributing to the professional field of Healthcare Chaplaincy.

We currently have funding secured for this position for one year. We anticipate submitting requests for funding for years two and three; however, those additional years have not yet been approved or secured. At this time, we can only confirm the initial 12-month term.

Essential Job Functions
  • Participates in the delivery of effective Spiritual Care services to patients, their loved ones and staff of all faith traditions.
  • Actively participates in the delivery of Chaplaincy Services according to the Standards of Practice of the Association of Professional Chaplains and the principles and practices of Outcome Oriented Chaplaincy and congruent with UChicago Medicine PRIDE values
  • Participates in meeting ritual and sacramental needs of patients and loves ones
  • Participates in the on-call schedule when needed to maintain 24/7 coverage of chaplaincy services
  • Works collaboratively with community ministers, volunteers and students
  • Actively support full integration of Spiritual Care services within UChicago Medicine
  • Promote, and participate with, interdisciplinary teams
  • Serve on organizational committees as appointed
  • Provide spiritual care education to hospital community and function as a resource to all staff concerning religious and spiritual matters relative to patient and self-care
  • Provide chaplaincy support to hospital staff as needed, both individually and in group debriefings.
  • Participate in programs and administrative activities of the hospital
  • Participate in and contribute to the professional field of Healthcare Chaplaincy
  • Maintain certification and good standing in a professional Chaplaincy certifying association
  • Author or co-author materials relevant to spiritual care
  • Participate in teaching/lecturing as invited and in research relevant to the field
Required Qualifications
  • Must be certified, or eligible for certification, as a Board Certified Chaplain by and in good standing with a national chaplaincy certifying body, such as the Spiritual Care Association and the Association of Professional Chaplains
  • Master's level degree in a field related to healthcare chaplaincy.
  • If not already certified, must be certified within two years of hire date.
  • 3-5 years of previous experience in hospital chaplaincy preferred
  • Demonstrates personal accountability, identifies own continuing education needs, and maintains current knowledge in their area of work. Performs consistently within the code of ethics of the certifying body.

Compensation & Benefits Overview

UChicago Medicine is committed to transparency in compensation and benefits. The pay range provided reflects the anticipated wage or salary reasonably expected to be offered for the position.

The pay range is based on a full-time equivalent (1.0 FTE) and is reflective of current market data, reviewed on an annual basis. Compensation offered at the time of hire will vary based on candidate qualifications and experience and organizational considerations, such as internal equity. Pay ranges for employees subject to Collective Bargaining Agreements are negotiated by the medical center and their respective union.
