Job Description

Samaritan Way is seeking a dependable, compassionate, and motivated Recovery Coach to join our Muskegon team.

The Recovery Coach will use lived experience, professional training, and recovery-focused skills to help participants identify goals, overcome barriers, connect with community resources, and build a sustainable life in recovery.

This position is ideal for someone who can remain relatable while maintaining professional boundaries, complete documentation on time, manage multiple responsibilities, and build positive relationships with participants, staff members, treatment providers, and community partners.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide individual recovery coaching services to assigned participants.
  • Help participants create person-centered recovery plans and identify achievable goals.
  • Support all pathways of recovery, including medication-assisted treatment.
  • Complete required assessments, recovery plans, progress notes, service documentation, and monthly updates accurately and on time.
  • Maintain regular contact with participants and manage an assigned caseload.
  • Assist participants with barriers involving treatment, housing, employment, transportation, education, identification, benefits, and community resources.
  • Connect participants with treatment providers, medical services, mental health services, mutual-aid groups, and other recovery supports.
  • Facilitate recovery-focused groups and educational activities when assigned.
  • Work closely with parole, probation, recovery court, treatment providers, housing staff, and other community partners when appropriate releases are in place.
  • Encourage participant accountability without directing, controlling, or making decisions for the participant.
  • Recognize warning signs of relapse, overdose risk, mental health concerns, and other emergencies.
  • Follow Samaritan Way crisis, overdose, mandatory-reporting, and emergency procedures.
  • Maintain participant confidentiality and comply with HIPAA, 42 CFR Part 2, organizational policies, and professional ethical standards.
  • Maintain healthy boundaries and avoid inappropriate dual relationships.
  • Attend staff meetings, supervision sessions, trainings, outreach events, and organizational activities.
  • Assist with outreach, community events, participant engagement, and other duties needed to support Samaritan Way’s mission.
  • Maintain a welcoming, respectful, trauma-informed, and recovery-focused environment.

Required Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • Recovery Coach certification or willingness to complete an approved certification within the required timeframe.
  • Personal lived experience with recovery, re-entry, behavioral health, or another closely related life experience is strongly preferred.
  • Ability to communicate respectfully with individuals from diverse backgrounds.
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professional boundaries.
  • Strong organization, time-management, and multitasking skills.
  • Ability to complete electronic documentation accurately and by required deadlines.
  • Dependable attendance and ability to report to work on time.
  • Basic computer skills, including email, electronic records, and online communication systems.
  • Ability to work independently while remaining accountable to supervisors and the larger team.
  • Ability to pass all required background checks and organizational screening requirements.

Preferred Qualifications

  • CCAR, CPRM, CPRC, or another recognized peer recovery certification.
  • Previous experience providing recovery coaching, peer support, case management, outreach, re-entry, or behavioral health services.
  • Knowledge of local Muskegon County treatment, housing, employment, medical, and social-service resources.
  • Experience working with individuals involved with parole, probation, recovery court, or other criminal-justice systems.
  • Current CPR, First Aid, and naloxone-response training.
  • Valid Michigan driver’s license, reliable transportation, and an acceptable driving record.

Skills and Personal Qualities

The successful candidate will be:

  • Compassionate and nonjudgmental.
  • Relatable while maintaining professional boundaries.
  • Dependable and punctual.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment.
  • Able to manage several responsibilities at once.
  • Open to supervision, feedback, and continued professional growth.
  • Committed to supporting multiple pathways of recovery.
  • Able to celebrate participant successes while helping participants remain accountable.
  • Passionate about helping people turn recovery into long-term stability and community connection.
